Papa J Jammeh is a Gambian poet, djembe player and cultural ambassador whose primary expertise lies in the tradition of the West African griot, the historian, storyteller and keeper of cultural memory. Coming from a noble background, Papa J’s artistic practice is deeply connected to Mande heritage and the preservation of its stories and traditions. His music combines traditional West African influences with contemporary production, creating a bridge between ancestral storytelling and modern audiences. Through Tales of Mande Vol. 1, Papa J continues his mission to promote, preserve and share Mande both nationally and internationally.
TALES OF MANDE INTRODUCTION
Tales of Mande Vol. 1 is the latest project from Gambian poet, djembe player and cultural ambassador Papa J Jammeh, an artist deeply rooted in the Mande tradition and the legacy of the West African griot.
The album brings together Papa J’s distinctive voice and storytelling with the soulful production of Ayodele “Ski” Shekoni. Drawing on generations of Mande tradition, the project explores stories, cultural memory and ancestral heritage through a contemporary musical lens.
His work draws from the griot tradition of West Africa, in which music, poetry and storytelling are used to preserve history and pass knowledge from one generation to the next. Tales of Mande Vol. 1 represents his commitment to keeping that legacy alive while introducing it to new generations and international audiences.
With its combination of soulful production, rhythmic djembe, poetic delivery and West African storytelling, the album offers a distinctive sound for programmes focused on African music, global sounds, culture and roots driven contemporary music.
